Billawar of Kathua District

Billawar is a Tehsil Head Quarter of Kathua District of Jammu and Kashmir. Billawar is also called Balaur. In 1598-1614 Billawar was established by King Bhopat Pal. It remained the capital of Basohli Rajas. The successors of the Royal Family are called “Billawarias”. There are few ancient monuments in the town. One of these is the most revered temple of Lord Shiva, Mahabilvakeshwar temple which was also called Hari Hara Temple. Billawar Town is located on the banks of Bhinni and Naaz streams.

It is trusted that the Pandavas visited Billawar Town in the last year of their exile and was fascinated by the Bill trees in which Billawar abounds. The famous Lord Shiva Mahabilvakeshwar temple was established where Pandavas had worshipped. The Bill, later on, turned into Billawar. Bani is a scenic and unspoiled valley and is the most prominent attraction in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. The Bani valley remains covered with ice and is also known as the “Mini Kashmir of India”. This glaciated valley is situated at an elevation of around 4200 ft in the lap of lofty mountains. The Sewa River flows near the valley and is known as the major water source in the nearby areas. The climatic conditions of the Bani experience the polar and temperate types. The main climatic phenomenon of the Bani Valley is the moist summer and severe winter. The Bani Valley has become a favorite site for adventurers and travelers because travelers would discover the various waterfalls, noisy streams, beautiful and vast meadows, and thick forests. Sapt Sarober Mandir - Kathua

Sapt Sarober Mandir is located in the Krishna Nagar region of the Kathua District. The Sapt Sarober Temple was erected by the former minister of the state Bhagat Chajju Ram in the year 1969. Choudhary Hari Singh and Choudhary Devidutta had donated their land for the holy temple.

The name of the temple is derived from “Sapt Rishis”, after the popular seven sages. There is a hollowed lake (Sapt Sarober) which is situated nearby the temple complex. The Pathshala (school) is also housed for tourists in the vicinity of the temple. A Dharamshala (rest houses for the tourists) is also being erected near the temple.

According to the Legends, a Shepherd once had a dream of Mata coming to Madhi Dhar. He went to the place where the goddess appeared and gave Darshan to him in the form of a little girl. Since then he started going regularly to Madhi Dhar for worshipping the goddess. Once there was a heavy snowfall, the Shepherd who was a regular worshiper ran to Madhi Dhar to worship the goddess. After realizing the difficulty of the Shepherd the goddess decided to go to the place where Dhouli Wali Mata is located now. The Shepherd erected the temple at that site dedicated to the goddess. A large number of devotees come and offer their prayers. Most people visit the Dhoula Wali Mata Temple during the festival of Navratras, a nine-day Hindu festival that is celebrated twice a year in the months of April and October.

Gurudwara Singh Sabha is a religious center, especially for the Sikh people. Gurudwara Singh Sabha is located in the center of the Kathua District and is mainly 2 kilometers away from the New Bus Stand. Mahabilvakeshwar temple is committed to the Hindu God of Destruction- Lord Shiva. Mahabilvakeshwar temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples in the Kathua District of Jammu and Kashmir. Formerly this temple is known as the Hari Hara Temple. This temple is situated in the heart of Billawar Town so this temple has derived its name Mahabivakeshwar from the place that is covered by the various bael trees. The devotees offer bael leaves to Lord Shiva because it is trusted that Lord Shiva is highly pleased when bael leaves which are commonly known as Bael-Patri in local parlance are offered to him.

The temple spire is around 60 ft high and is ascended on a square-shaped sanctum. The temple has various other idols of Hindu Gods like Ganesha, Bhairava, Brahma, and Vishnu and along with the five-headed sculpture of Shiva. According to the famous folklore, it is said that the Pandavas used this site as their worship place during their period of exile. Several devotees come here to visit this pious site to offer their prayers to Lord Shiva.

It is also said that this temple is very much related to the family of Maharaja Hari Singh because the former said that there is a casualty in this royal family, a brick falls from the temple which has a spot of blood on that brick.

Hiranagar is a town and a notified area committee of the Kathua District in Jammu and Kashmir. Hiranagar is Tehsil Head Quarters. Hiranagr is believed to be established by Rajput Raja Hira Singh who was the son of King Dhyan Singh and a nephew of King Gulab Singh. 

Raja Hira Singh established the town after his name when he was vouchsafed with the jagir of Jasrota by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab (1834-44 AD). He also modernized the Jasmergarh Fort located between the Bein and Tarnah streams. The fort also contained the tehsil and other government offices preceding 1947. Later the offices were shifted to Hiranagar. The Hiranagar town has a rapidly Developing Industrial Estate and a Modern Industrial Training Institute. The nearest railheads are Ghagwal Railway Station and Hira Nagar Railway Station to reach Hiranagar town by rail.

Mata Bala Sundri Temple Nagri - Kathua

Mata Bala Sundri temple is a historic sacred temple which is located on the outskirts of Parole village. Mata Bala Sundri temple is around 13 kilometers away from the Kathua District. Mata Bala Sundri is also popular as Bala Ji Sundri. The Mata Bala Sundri Temple is covered by a grove of mango trees. According to the mythology, a Brahmin was cutting down the grass and then hit his sickle on a stone that started oozing blood out of it. Later, the mata came into his dream and ordered him to place a stone for worship under the banyan tree. Soon after the stone was considered to be the reincarnation of the sacred goddess and enshrined in the shrine. Several devotees came here during the popular festival of Hindus, Navratri. A big fair was held in this temple during the Navratri Festival. Bus service is also available from the Kathua district to reach Mata Bala Sundri temple.

A ‘Shobha Yatra’ was departed in Katra Town, the base camp for the devotees who came to visit the temple of Vaishno Devi. According to the officials, complex arrangements have been made by the local administration and the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board for the pilgrims. On the way to the temple, sanitation facilities, and requisite water facilities have been administered. Special food will be provided at Shrine Board eateries for the devotees who are fasting in Navratri. During the Navratri celebration, tight security has been commenced on the way to the temple.

Peer Kho Cave

The Peer Kho Cave is a temple that is raised as the highlight in the tourist places list of Jammu and Kashmir. As per the archaeological records, the Peer Kho Cave Temple was established in the fifteenth century when Raja Ajaib Dev was under rule. Peer Kho Cave temple is one of the other well-known Shiva temples in the Jammu region. Acacia forests and igneous rocks set out as the backdrop to this cave temple. These trees make the environment more acceptable for God’s worship. Even though various famous legends are connected to the Peer Kho Cave Temple. The antiquity of the temple cannot yet be dated with confidence. Some people considered that this is one of the oldest historic places in the Shiwalik Region. The story of the temple goes that the Jamvant who is the bear God who played a key role in helping Lord Rama in conquering the Demon Ravana in the populous epic Ramayana had cogitated in the Peer Kho Cave temple for a long duration. That is why this temple is also called the Jamvant Cave. It is widely believed that the Shiva Lingam was established naturally in the cave of Peer Kho Temple and the people of the Jammu region began worshipping it conscientiously with a lot of respect.

Peer Kho Cave is situated around 3.5 kilometers away from Jammu City. This cave temple is located on the busy circular road but this temple is easily attainable from different corners of Jammu City.

Inside the temple, there are two natural caves each of the caves is having a depth of about 20 to 30 feet. Peer Kho Cave temple experiences the huge inundation of devotees which grows during the celebration of Shivratri and other Hindu Festivals. The Aap Shambu Temple, The Ranbireshwar Temple, and The Panjbakhtar Temple are the other temples that are situated in proximity to the Peer Kho Cave Temple.

A famous Hindu Festival which is called Bahu Mela is held during the time of Navratris in the area of that fort. Navratri is celebrated twice a year from March-April and September-October. This fascinates a very large amount of devotees to the fort and the temple situated within it. Sunday and Tuesday of every week are the special days of worship at the shrine. Special counters are opened near the fort area during the main festival time which is selling paraphernalia like flowers, red cloth, incense, sweets, coconuts, and so on, to make special contributions to the deity in the shrine.

The District of Jammu

Jammu is one of the most crowded districts of the Jammu Division in India. There is a total of five bridges on the river. Jammu has a sub-tropical climate with warm summer and cold and foggy winter. The main crops grown in Jammu are Barley, Millet, Jowar, Pulses, Paddy, Bajra, Maize, and Wheat. But the major crops are grown in Jammu are Maize and wheat. Resai District of Jammu


Reasi District is one of the eighth recently generated districts of Jammu which came in the existence from 1st April 2007. The essential occupation of the people is Agriculture and federated activities. Reasi District is economically an underdeveloped District. The main crops that are grown in Reasi District are Maize and Wheat, but now farmers have started to medley in Horticulture and vegetable crops. The Reasi District is enclosed by Udhampur District and Ramban District in the East, Jammu District in the South, Rajouri District in the West, and by Kulgam District in the North.

Reasi District is situated at a distance of 64 kilometers from Jammu. Reasi District is predominately a hill district that revels inconsistent climatic conditions that range from sub-tropical to semi-temperate. The summers are substantially warm and the winters are cold with snowfall on the high ridges. One most attractive thing about Reasi District is that in summers, the temperature will be less than the temperature of other districts of Jammu and in winters, the temperature will be higher than the temperature of other districts of Jammu. So, this thing makes Reasi the most favorable district for all kinds of people who visit there. 

Reasi District is precious with numerous tourism hotspots. There are various places that you can visit in this district. The Reasi district has numerous pilgrimage places, waterfalls, caves, etc. While, the major Hindu crusade sites like-Gulab Garh, Dhagantop, Rama Kunda, Bhimgarh Fort, Shivkhori, Vaishno Devi Temple, Kalika Temple, Baba Dhansar, Dhyangarh, Baba Bidda, Siyad Baba Waterfall, Sula Park, Dera Baba, Thanpal, Dewel Marg are situated in Reasi District. Mainly in summers, due to these sites, Reasi District perceives great in-rush of people from all over the world. Reasi District is a great place for adventure fanatics. River rafting is a very famous adventurous sport in this district. You can opt for river rafting in Chenab River, 35 kilometers long extend. And you can also do river rafting on the way to Shiv Khori near Siyad Baba.

After this, this district had also the highest Railway Bridge in the world with a height of 1315 meters. This bridge is constructed on the Chenab River, which ultimately joins the Reasi-Banihal railway connection constructed by Konkan Railways. Salal Dam Power Project is also in the Reasi District. The Hydro Power Plant irradiates the whole of Northern India. This dam provides electricity to Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi.

Reasi District is one of the most charming and gorgeous places that nobody wants to leave. The Chenab River flows through and the view of mountains softens your heart and this feels that you are in the lap of nature. The wind, climate, and trees make you feel that you are in another world. The extensive view of this district will carve in your mind forever. Most of the area of Reasi District is surrounded by dense forest. In those dense forests, there are an array of plants and animals. Hence, the Reasi District is liberal in flora and fauna.
