Diwali Faraad ( दिवाळीचे फराळ ) Maharashtra

Diwali is the biggest and one of the most important festivals of Hindus.

In Maharashtra it is celebrated on a grand scale just like the rest of our country, India.

Diwali faraad are the sweets and savouries prepared by Maharashtrian women to offer as naivedya to Goddess Mahalakshmi on Lakshmi poojan as well as to distribute in their social and friends circle.

Any guest visiting a Marathi house on the occasion of Diwali gets to taste a plateful of these goodies.

The work of the women folk starts much before the festival as the things to be prepared need to be planned, calculated and assembled as these items are prepared on a huge scale so as to distribute generously among family, relations, neighbours and friends.

Broadly the list of items prepared include the following -

  1. Besan Ladoo (बेसन लाडू )  - One of the most delicious of Indian home made sweets, Besan Ladoo is made by roasting chickpeas flour in pure ghee to the point it gives a nice aroma. Sugar and cardamom powder along with grinded or roughly crushed cashew nuts and raisins are added to give it a rich taste.

  2. Rava Ladoo ( रवा लाडू ) - Similar to the Besan Ladoos, Rava is firstly dry roasted or roasted in ghee to remove its uncooked flavour. Sugar syrup is added to bring it all together before shaping into ladoos. Adding cashew nuts, raisins and almonds is optional.

  3. Nankhatai ( नानखताई ) - Nankhatai can rightly be said to be Indian cookie. A dough of  refined flour, ghee, powdered sugar and powdered cardamom is made.

Depending on the size preferred , Nankhatai is baked in a home OTG or from the nearest bakery. Adding half a cashew or almond or powdered pistachios on the top gives it a crunchy bite.

  1. Teekha sev ( तिखट सेव ) - Dough of Chickpeas flour, oil, flavoured with red chilli powder and salt is shaped in the Sev maker and deep fried to crispy state.

  2. Bhajani chakli ( भाजणी चकली ) - Rice, moong dal, urad dal , coriander seeds and cumin seeds are dry roasted separately and cooled. They are then pounded from the nearest flour mill to get a fine flour. Adding in hot oil, white sesame seeds, carom seeds, red chilli powder and salt a dough is prepared and spiral-shaped in the chakli maker. They are then deep fried till crisp and crunchy.

  3. Nariyal karanji ( नारियल करंजी ) - A sweet and savoury pastry can be an apt description of a karanji. A dough of refined flour is made and rolled into small rounds. Dessicated coconut, powdered jaggery, khus khus, cardamom powder mixture is  stuffed in the centre. The corners of rolled dough are packed with little water and pressed in a karanji presser. The karanjis are then deep fried, cooled completely before storing in airtight steel containers.

  4. Shankarpali ( शंकरपाली ) - A dough of refined flour, ghee and sugar syrup is rolled like roti. Shankarpali cutter is used to cut into small 1 inch pieces with curly ends. Deep fried to remove the uncooked taste and bring it to the required crisp and crunchy state.

  5. Poha chivda ( पोहे चिवड़ा ) - Thin poha is either deep fried or dry roasted to crispiness. Peanuts, dry coconut slices, cashew nuts, raisins, chana dal, curry leaves, and green chillies are each fried separately in little oil. Everything is mixed with the roasted poha and a special chivda masala is sprinkled as per taste along with a teaspoon of sugar. The whole thing is again dry roasted together so as to assimilate the seasoning. Cooled and stored in airtight containers.

Home made sweets and savouries are undoubtedly better than market ones due to quality, taste and lack of chemical preservatives.

Marathi Diwali Faraad is a treat non-maharashtrians look forward to each year that make this festival even more special.

Ganeshotsav ( गणेशोत्सव ) in Maharashtra

Ganapati Bappa, Morya

Mangalmurti Morya

Lalbaugcha Raja ( 2009 )

To say that Ganesh Utsav is one of the most beloved and popular Hindu  festivals of Maharashtra will be absolutely correct.

Popularised by the great freedom fighter Lokamanya Tilak during our freedom struggle to unite the Hindus, this festival has gained an immense following down the years.

Ganesh Chaturthi evokes excitement, joy, devotion in millions of Lord Ganpati devotees all over Maharashtra.

The Chaturthi after the Amavasya in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada ( भाद्रपद ) is celebrated as Ganeshotsav /  Vinayak Chaturthi.

As per the Gregorian calendar it falls between 22 nd of August and 20 th of September.

It is believed that on this day Lord Ganpati leaves his abode in Mt Kailash along with his mother Gauri and visits his devotees to take away all their obstacles, difficulties and bring prosperity.

He is the Lord of new beginnings, wisdom and intelligence and the destroyer of obstacles. ( विघ्नहर्ता )

Due to a boon by his father Lord Shiv, Lord Ganpati's name is evoked before the start of any prayer, mantra, auspicious occasion, new endeavour, important enterprise.

The making Lord Ganpati idols ( मूर्ति ) starts almost a month before the festival with the Padya pooja ( पदयपूजन )

Historically Ganesh murtis were made from clay and immersed in the local water bodies.

Commercialisation lead to idols being made on a large scale with plaster of paris that does not dissolve in water and leads to water pollution.

The circle of time has again made clay idols popular among environment conscious devotees.

Booking for the idols is done in advance and is a much joyous activity for the devotees to choose as per their likes, budget etc.

The festival lasts from 11/2 days, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days, 9 days or 11 days as per individual choice and capacity, with the large pandals going in for 21 / 51 days as well.

Homes are cleaned and thermocol temples prepared for Ganesh ji to reside in.

The temples are decorated with innumerable decorative articles, fairy lights, oil lamps, flowers etc.

Rangoli is drawn outside the main doors.

Similarly, Public and Saarvajanik pandals also leave no stone unturned in erecting unique and special temporary abodes for the Lord.

The installation of the idol is done either a day before or on the first day with the chanting of religious mantras and prayers. Families, neighbours, friends participate with great vigour.

Kumkum, sandalwood, turmeric tikkas are applied to the Lord's forehead. Offerings of sweets, fruits and flowers are placed. Oil lamps are lit and it is a must that the main oil lamp should not extinguish till the time of the last prayer when the Lord leaves the abode.

Morning and evening prayers are held with great devotion. Prasad consisting of the Lord's favourite modak along with other sweets like ladoos, karanji, fruits is distributed. Sarvajanik and group meals are arranged. Many devotees fast during these 11 days.

Some social organizations associated with the big and popular pandals also hold public welfare medical and blood donation camps etc.

Dances, games, songs and music, fun and frolic become a part of the atmosphere in these 11 days. The festival unites devotees across all age groups, class and social divides and gives a feeling of oneness and unity. It has become a popular ritual for the people to visit various well-known public  pandals for the Lord's darshan to seek his blessings. The huge and beautiful Idols installed  bring much joy and happiness to all.

The 11th day is Anant Chaturdashi when the Lord leaves to go back to his parents, Lord Shiv and Parvati at Mt Kailash.

Accordingly, the idols are taken with great pomp and vigour, dances and musical bands to the nearest water bodies for immersion.

The chants of

 " Ganpati Bappa Morya...

    Pudhchya varshi lavkar ya "

are heard everywhere, on every devotee's lips.

Buddha Mahotsav-Uttar Pradesh

Buddha is one of the many epithets of a teacher who lived in northern India sometime between the 6th and the 4th century before the Common Era.His followers, known as Buddhists, propagated the religion that is known today as Buddhism

The title buddha was used by a number of religious groups in ancient India and had a range of meanings, but it came to be associated most strongly with the tradition of Buddhism and to mean an enlightened being, one who has awakened from the sleep of ignorance and achieved freedom from suffering.

History of Buddha Mahotsav-

The story of his enlightenment; of his renounce and sacrifices; and his transformation from Prince Siddhartha to the Buddha continues to inspire people to this day. The mighty mystic became the establisher of the religion of Buddhism - an ideology which once dominated the minds of the major section of the population of the Indian subcontinent. It is said that all the three important events in the life of Gautama Buddha – his birth, enlightenment and salvation – fall on the same day of the year. Owing to this happenstance, the day holds immense value in Buddhism. The decision to celebrate Buddha’s birth anniversary on the first full moon day of Vaisakha was taken by the World Fellowship of Buddhists in May, 1960.

Buddha Mahotsav as the name suggests the festival is commemorated to honor and celebrate Lord Buddha. The festival is celebrated in Kushinagar, which is known to be the place where Lord Buddha gained enlightenment.Celebrated to honor Lord Buddha, the festival is celebrated each year in the month of December from 29th to 31st. Lord Buddha was born on the Puranmashi (Full moon) in the month of Vaisakh in 563 BC.

The Buddha Mahotsav is held at Kushinagar, Sarnath and Varanasi to celebrate the birthday of Lord Buddha. Buddha got enlightenment the same day he was born and on the same day is marked as the death anniversary of Gautama Buddha.

How is it Celebrated?

Sermons and reading of the Buddhist scriptures are another significant spiritual activities carried out by the devotees at Sarnath. They put forward fruits, flowers, candles, etc in front of the statues of the Lord Buddha according to their beliefs and customs. Decoration of the whole area at Sarnath with the earthen lamps takes place in the evening of the day.

There is also a tradition of taking dips in the holy river Ganga as it is believed this washes away sins.On this day, followers of Buddhism wear white clothes and meditate. They consume only vegetarian food. Often, people also celebrate it by preparing ‘kheer’- an Indian sweet dish, at their homes. Offerings are made to the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, and alms are also distributed to the needy and poor.

Buddha Mahotsav was first started at the Sarnath in the year 1998 by the UP tourism and Ministry of Tourism of Government of India. K. R.

Kumbh Mela-Prayag-Uttar Pradesh

Prayag in modern-day Allahabad is believed to be the most important pilgrimage centre for Hindus.

History of Kumbh-

According to legends, Vishnu was carrying a Kumbh (pot) of amrit (nectar), when a scuffle broke out and four drops were spilled. They fell to earth at the four Tirthas of Prayag, Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain. A tirtha is a place where the devout can attain salvation. The event is commemorated every three years by the Kumbh Mela, held at each tirtha in turn; the Sangam is known as Tirtharaj, the ‘King of Tirthas’ and here the Kumbh is held once in every twelve years, which is the greatest and holiest of all.

Each site’s celebration is based on a distinct set of astrological positions of the Sun, the Moon, and Jupiter, the holiest time occurring at the exact moment when these positions are fully occupied. The Kumbh Mela at Prayag, in particular, attracts millions of pilgrims. In addition, a Great Kumbh Mela festival is held every 144 years at Prayag. The Kumbh Mela lasts several weeks and is one of the largest festivals in the world, attracting more than 200 million people in 2019, including 50 million on the festival’s most auspicious day.

How is Kumbh Mela Celebrated?

The main ritual of Kumbh Mela is bathing in the rivers. Washing in holy waters is believed to deliver worshippers from their past sins and lead them to moksha, or liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Worshippers will line up before sunrise, and proceed into the water throughout the day. Ascetics known as sadhus also play essential roles in the tradition. There are a variety of sadhus, some of which are recognizable by their matted hair and naked bodies coated in ash. Although they generally lead lives of isolation, at Kumbh Mela these holy men come to together en masse in pursuit of enlightenment.

Attractions at Kumbh Mela-

Akharas and Sadhus-

Akhara is the place for a religious meeting where sadhus carry out rituals. The saints are known to be followers of Lord Shiva and Vishnu. Some of them are a bare body while others are dressed in saffron.

Satsangs

Satsangs are an integral part of Kumbh. Devotees sit for hours listening to devotional hymns and prayers.

Life at night during kumbh mela-

The city of Allahabad does not sleep during Kumbh. The pleasant view of the river with a gentle breeze and the mystical ghats

Camp Life-

Camps are set up for Sadhus and people who wish to stay near the bathing area. Living in tents allows one to interact with people from all cultures and faiths and at times gives a new perspective on life.

Food-

The mouthwatering Langars (communal meals ) and Prasad (sacred offerings) are given to all devotees.

Thus, the greatness of the Kumbh is reflected in the chanting of mantras, shahi snans of akharas, the brilliance of the earthen lamps and the history that is associated with it. The hearts of devotees are filled with joy and exultation whenever they visit the Kumbh Mela.
