Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most popular of Hindu festivals. This is the birthday of Lord Ganesha. It is the day most sacred to Lord Ganesha. It falls on the 4th day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada (August-September). It is observed throughout India, as well as by devoted Hindus in all parts of the world.

The Ganesh festival is one of the most widely celebrated Hindu festivals all over India and holds a special place in the hearts of Goan people. It is an occasion of fun and frolic, a time of cleaning and decorating the place of worship of the elephant headed God, who is very much revered amongst his humble devotees all over. More importantly, it brings about a reunion of family and friends, exchanging gifts and overall rejoicing to celebrate the birth of Lord Ganesha.

There are various idols of Lord Ganesh in different shapes and sizes well adorned and installed in heavily decorated pandals by various merchant associations and other merchant groups in all the cities of Goa, the preparations for this much adored festival begins just at the culmination of the harvesting season or the holy month of Shravana. As per Hindu customs and traditions, Lord Ganesha idols are worshipped with due respect and devotion amidst a lot of gaiety and splendour for 1 1/2, 5, 7, 9 or 11 days in the month of Bhadrapada after which they are ceremonially immersed in big lakes or oceans. The immersion on thej day of Anant Chaturdashi marks the end of the most favourite festival of the Hindu people in Goa and all over.

The festival ushers in a season of joyous celebration all over Goa. Besides the religious significance, the festival is an occasion for family members to reunite and seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha. People of all communities visit their Hindu friends to join in the celebration.

Modak are considered to be one of the favorite food of Lord Ganesha Ukkadiche Modak are made up of rice flour stuffed with cocount and jaggrey fillings  and than steamed.

Laddos 

Ladoos like coconut ladoo, besan ladoo and nevereos are also a popular snack. 

Delicious food is offered as a bhog to Ganeshji and than served to guest.

The history of the Fort is long ,It has been held  by many rulers for varying lengths of time.The Fort is the only laterite fort in the village of Chapora the walls has natural slopes and drops of the peninsula .This makes them difficult to climb.

The best time to visit the Fort is in the evenings,once the fierce sun heat has receded.

Arambol - The best gliding site in India


Arambol in Goa, is a small fishing village in Goa. It is in the north of Panaji at 50 kms. Arambol have two beaches Harmal Beach and the Querim Beach. The Harmal Beach is full of activity and it is the northern beach of Goa. The beach is relatively clean and have some bays and fresh water pools which are good for swimming. The Querim beach can be reached only by foot and it have steep cliffs and hard rocks all along the way. 

The village near the beach is quite friendly. The local people here are mainly fishermen. But due to the growing activity one can find, internet cafes, travel agents and agencies, money changers, motorbike hiring and a lot more.

The best activity this place is famous for is para gliding.Though there are Anjuna and Vagator for paragliding, Arambol offers best training field for the beginners. The smooth and steady sea breeze helps the gliders to learn the nuances faster and easier. The ridges along the coast helps in flying in both the North West and South West winds. The best season to get trained is from October to June. One can enjoy smooth flying weather and climate all through the day during this period. (The course fee will be some where between Rs. 1200 to Rs. 2000 per day).

One can go paragliding from three locations, the Om rock which helps in flying in the South West direction. Kerry take off and the 1 km long ridge to the right of the sweet water lake helps in flying in the West and North West winds. The 1km long ridge is 100 ft high and is highly helpful for the beginners and learners who wish to fly from top to bottom and land in the beach.

Another best pass time one can do in this beach area from the month of November to March is Boating, Fishing and Dolphin spotting.  

Arambol is the best place for the budget travellers, who wish to visit Goa, but have a better and reasonably priced accomodation.

Alorna Fort, Pernem, Goa

Located at a distance of 31 kms from the capital city of Goa, Panaji, the Alorna fort is on the banks of the Chapora river. Dated back to the 17th century, this Alorna Fort is said to be built by Bhansales of Sawantwadi. The fort is built with high defense mechanisms and to withstand the invasions by the Marathas from the north. It was captured by Marquis of Castello Novo who was later knows as Marquis of Alnora. The fort was in his possession till 1746, then it was captured by Dom Frederico Guilherme de Souza and then it came to the possession of the Portugese in 1781.

 


There were 4 gun barracks and only 2 can be seen. The Alorna fort is in ruined condition but the scenic beauty enroute and also from the fort is breath taking. One can see fields and mountains alone from the fort. There is only one building inside the fort and no other inhabitants near by though there is a local panchayat.

Alorna Fort is 10kms away from the NH17 and so it have to be reached only by road. Cabs and taxis can be hired from the airport and railway stations.
