Pondicherry: A Perfect Place to Refresh Yourself

*By Ms. Uma Sridharan*

Introduction to Pondicherry

Pondicherry, a charming Union Territory of India with a rich French heritage, is a unique destination known for its heritage buildings, sun-soaked beaches, authentic French cuisine, diverse restaurants, and a wide selection of liquors. These attractions draw travelers from all over India and beyond, seeking a refreshing and culturally enriching experience.

Manakula Vinayakar Temple

The Manakula Vinayakar Temple, dating back to A.D. 1666, predates the French colonization of Pondicherry. The temple derives its name from the Tamil words 'Manal' (sand) and 'Kulam' (pond), reflecting the sand-filled pond that once lay on its western side.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram

One of the most renowned ashrams in India, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, located on Rue de la Marine, attracts devotees from across the globe. Founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo, a great philosopher-poet, the ashram is a center for spiritual growth and yoga practice.

Sri Aurobindo's chief disciple, Mirra Alfassa, known as 'Mother,' played a crucial role in the establishment of the ashram and took over its management after his death in 1950 until her own passing in 1973. The mortal remains of both Sri Aurobindo and the Mother are kept in the main ashram building, under a frangipani tree, and are decorated daily with flowers.

Auroville

Auroville, or the 'City of Dawn,' was conceived by the Mother with the vision of creating a universal town where people from all creeds, nationalities, and politics could live together in peace and harmony. Located about 8 km northwest of Pondicherry, Auroville was designed by French architect Roger Anger and is home to a diverse international community.

The Matrimandir, a place for silent concentration, sits in the heart of Auroville, surrounded by 62 acres of gardens. During Auroville’s inauguration on February 28, 1968, soil from 124 countries was mixed and placed in a lotus-shaped urn to symbolize universal oneness. This urn is now located at the center of an amphitheater in the Matrimandir Gardens.
