Navsari became an independent district in the State of Gujarat on the 2nd of October, 1997. Previously it was part of Surat from 1949 onwards till 1964. Later on it went on to be included in the district of Valsad that was further bifurcated into present day Valsad and Navsari. The district has historical importance for it was here in the coastal village of Dandi that Mahatma Gandhi started the Salt Satyagraha movement against British rule. Today the district is a hub of many major as well as small scale industries that add to its economy. Production of Sugar, Salt, Floriculture and Horticulture are big sources of income among others. Quite a few well known industries like Best Roses Biotech Pvt. Ltd., Mafatlal Industries Ltd., Tata Steel Ltd. are based here.
