The Angaraha Khshethram of the Navagraha Temples in and around Kumbakonam is Vaideeshwaran Kovil.
Let me start my article with our
Family Deity aka Kuladeivam Sri Balambika sametha Vaideeswara Swamy.
Vaideeswaran Koil is the name of
the place where Shiva is worshipped as Doctor’s Doctor who can heal all the
diseases. Also known as Vaithyanathaswamy master of all doctors, he is residing
here with Balambika and Selvamuthu Kumaran.
Historical name of this temple is
Pullirukku Velur.
This temple is one of the
Navagraha temples dedicated to Mars (Chevvai) or Ankrakan.
The temple is maintained
by Dharmapuram
Adheenam, a Saivite mutt or
monastic institution located in the town of Mayiladuthurai.
Pond
The name of the pond is Siddhamirtham
which is situated within the temple believed to be contains Amirdham that can
cure all diseases. But nobody is allowed to take bath in the pond these days.
History of the Temple
During Ramayana period, Rama, Lakshmana and Saptarishis have
worshipped Vaideeswara Swamy in this place. The holy ashes of Jatayu is kept in
a separate place known as Jatayu Kundam.
During the war against the
demon king Soorapadman. Lord Subramanian’s army was severely injured. Shiva
came to rescue as Vaideeswaran and cured the warriors.
Dhanvanthri Siddhar’s Jeeva
samathi is also situated inside the temple.
According to the five
inscriptions found, this temple is dated back to the period of Kulothunga Chola I (1070-1120 CE).
Temple Timings
Daily 6 am – 12 noon.
4.30 pm to 9.30 pm.
Due to current pandemic
situation, the temple will not allow devotees on Fridays, Saturdays and
Sundays.
